About the project
This project is special for me as it was the first time that I have worked with a team in which everyone had a specific role. The goal was to create a digital game with a special focus on designing a concept with ’emergent gameplay’. In my opinion, the project holds a lot of potential for further developments.
The game
‘Lost Light’ was a story focused game with a couple of unusual mechanics. The goal was to play around the illuminated parts of a 3D environment, and how would the mechanics change when the player is in the dark without light. The player would wander around and discover the world in this ever changing setting. From gameplay perspective it could be best described as an RPG (role-playing game) with quests and character development but without companions.
The design of the game
I had two main roles in this project, one was the task of the designer and the other was the main organizer. It meant that I was in charge of supervising the progress and adjusting the approach if it was necessary. Creating this game was a unique challenge, since the focus was on generating a setting for the player where they could discover and exploit emergent gameplay. Other important aspects were level design and story concept, and it was quite fun to make them. I have also contributed to the development of the game in the form of coding more simple parts, such as the credit or the main menu scene.
